Politicians and ridiculing of God's name. By Ope Babs.
It took me several days thinking of how God's name has been ridiculed on the table of unworthy confessions made by men. Even though i am not perfect myself, I have tried hard to imagine the foundation of such display of righteousness even in the face of imminent graft and crimes in the society of today. I came to a conclusion that it all started as a child when you steal a piece of meat in the pot and your parents asked you who took the meat, because you are afraid of being beaten or condemned, you quickly denied, and even because even though your parents are not so committed to religion you said 'Emi ko, Olorun ngbo' ( 'God knows, not me') in order to make them believe you are not the one who stole meat from the pot.
Having succeeded in convincing them and make them pounce on other siblings and probably the innocent one who could not defend himself very well had to be punished for your sin. You now went into the corner to say 'Olorun dari ese mi ji mi o' (God please forgive me of my sins) which an innocent person actually suffered for and you expect God to forgive you? The reason why you felt you had to appease God is because you have probably been taught in your Sunday school lesson that "Though shall not call the name of the Lord your God in vain" as part of the ten commandments. You sure knew you have violated the commandment. Like a friend of mine would say, your disgrace is somewhere doing push ups.
Same is the situation in our society today. Many of such children have grown into adults and eventually found themselves in the corridors of power and now they suddenly remembers they can steal an estate and swear in the name of God that they never did and still go into a secret place to appease God for forgiveness of sins. What a ridicule? Those who have conscience would rather put the blame on the devil and seek plea bargaining.
In Nigerian contemporary society, the best way you can set up a 'Gullible Academy' is to try to reflect a godly person even though you might not be. Just say something like 'God is behind the righteous'or 'God will vindicate me' on twitter and you will get thousands of followers in a couple of days. In fact the court judge who is likely to try you being a religious person might be one of the people to follow you on social media. You will get multiple retweets, comments will come 'God is with you my Honourable", "Your enemies will fail in Jesus name", "Let them try God and see" blablabla......
You can easily play religious monopoly to cause disaffection among ethnic groups. There are many Internet journalists that are very much ready to do the hatchet job for you. Just tell them to capitalise on a crisis somewhere as a fight against your religion and you will see people sacrificing their lives for you over the unverified information you have circulated. Even Jesus Christ will be envious of your followership. To Him the scripture is 'many are called but few are chosen' and to you scripture will be 'Few are incited but many actually rose to the defense'. That is how appalling the insensitivity and insensibility of the people can be. Most people are never indisposed to something comsidered to be wrong. They will defend the indefensible and even curse contrary opinions using both Biblical and Quranic verses. Those who don't believe in the two major religions will curse with God of irons, god of thunder, ojuju Calabar and amadioha.
What baffles me is that politicians will use the name of God to fortell their vindication during 'degoatification process (borrowing the term from Prof. Pius Adesanmi) and later the news headline will come with the caption of their returned loots. Then the followers will come with different consoling messages "They forced him to give what he didn't steal for him to have freedom", "his friends and family had to raise money for him to secure freedom" etc.
I am not against the calling the name of GOD in all challenging situations but that should not be said in vain. God always prove Himself above His name and would not allow His name ridiculed. If you call His name righteously He will hear you but if you don't you are only compounding your problems because your disgrace had been busy doing the push ups since the day you dared call His name in vain. Be warned!
