DASUKI GATE, BUHARI'S SUVs AND THE INTELLECTUALS' MENTALITY.
By Wale Ope.
A lot of revelations have been made recently by the embattled former National Security Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan in the person of Col. Sambo Dasuki. The revelations were so shocking that it leaves many still wondering why such high degree of looting and sharing of public funds took such mindless dimension at the expense of both the ill-equipped soldiers on the battle field and the victims of insurgence both living and the dead whom the money was meant to cater for.
Initially the former NSA was very adamant that he did nothing wrong and that the Federal government was only persecuting and harrassing him for no reasons. He also accused the Federal government of consistently violating his fundamental human rights despite the court ruling which okayed his seeking of medical attention abroad. Dasuki maintained the tempo of his adamance before the EFCC officials until he got a shocking revelation of how his finance officer had opened up and mentioned names of high profile elites involved in the monumental fraud.o This left him (Dasuki) with no option than to further give shocking revelations on how the $2.1.bn arms fund was shared and used for PDP's political emancipation. A whopping sum of N460m was even given to the former governor of Sokoto state, Atthairu Bafarawa for prayers against Boko Haram. That is still a mirage to me as a person. I wonder if such prayers were said in the moon or in the eclipse.
The former NSA and his finance officer have been reeling out names of yam eaters with most of the yam eaters on the defensive side trying to justify the legitimacy of the contract fraud. I even read in the news that one Dr. Ayu claimed to have received N450m for consultation and I wonder what the effect of the consultation has brought to the fight against terrorism. I think such consultation should have been meant to turn night to day, which obviously cannot be substantiated in any empirical sense.
Let me quickly swerve from the background explanation to the point I am trying to make.
Buhari's SUVs
Recently, the news made round that Col. Dasuki also claimed to have bought two SUV Jeeps for President Buhari after he survived Boko Haram attack and this has generated a lot of wailings from the PDP apologists. Several explanations made to them to differentiate between 'entitlement' and 'misappropriation of funds' fell in deaf ears. You can never win them unless you are ready to tarry for the whole year arguing. Let me not digress from the main issue, I shall come back to the wailings. The real issue is that President Buhari as at the time the two SUVs were giving to him was in the status of an ex-head of state or simply put ex-president. Under the remuneration of ex-head of states (and other ancillary matters) as stated in Section 3 sub section 1 of the decree, the former head of states are entitled to three cars every four years. In other words, President Buhari got what he was rightfully entitled to. Claiming that PMB got the cars from the arms fund has nothing to do with him because he got his entitlement from the government which is always being provided for in the budget of the nation. It is the responsibility of the incumbent government to make provisions for the former head of states so they don't ride bicycle or keke marwa to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting. It will amount to gross irresponsibility and lack of accountability for a government to have allowed the fund meant for the procurement of arms to be used for any other purpose outside it. It is incontestable that President Buhari got his entitlement and could not have allowed his integrity built over the years to be dragged to the mud of criminal desperation. Moreover, President Buhari was never a PDP member to have been able to know the source of the fund. Even some PDP members were shocked at the revelations because they were kept in the dark while the scam lasted. So the matter is up for anyone to contest in the court of law if not satisfied with the explanation made so far by the spokespersons to the President. So if Dasuki is trying to implicate the President in the scam, then he has jumped into the procession of the maggots and successfully shot himself in the leg. No two ways!
Intellectual Mentality
This caused me a lot of worries because if the anti-corruption fight will succeed, we as citizens should stand tall with the government to nip the menace in the bud. Directly or indirectly everyone is a victim of perpetual inhumane looting of public treasury. Whether we like the President's face or not, the subject matter should be 'Fighting Corruption'. I have always said it that no matter how hard you fight corruption, corruption must seek and device ways of fighting back. We should not be distracted by the antics of the connived criminals to frustrate the ongoing trial and loose our sights of logical defence and reasoning. If the fight succeeds, it will successfully create futuristic template for generations to come. While express opinion of every individual matters, it does us no good when our opinions are not centred on the 'menace' but we rather choose opinions that are 'individualistic'. Though both are relevant in the pursuit of justice, we should rather censor the individuals involved to determine their antecedents and the rationale behind everything they say.
As it stands, the fight continues and whether we are for or against corruption, justice must prevail. Let us play our part and make Nigeria an enviable place.
God bless Naija
